The Identity Crisis that Every Asian Youth Faces

With Asian societies and their incredibly uptight cultural norms and values, it has given rise to an identity crisis outbreak within the youth.

In typical Asian societies, the youth is known to be loaded with unrealistic expectations. Our collective brown or Asian culture is generally traditional, strict, and unwilling to evolve. The youth is constantly in conflict with one’s identity and has probably faced an identity crisis at least once in their lifetime.

Normally, the very first thing one would identify as would be their gender; your gender is the most integral part of your identity, before anything one would rush to defend their gender. It is something that you are generally 100% in the power of. Secondly, then comes your religion; religion plays a great role in one’s identity, shaping them into the person they are today or simply just providing the people with the basic guidelines of life. Moreover, thirdly you identify with your Nationality; however, in most cases, the youth faces multiple identity crises, in the sense that they feel like a rebel trapped in the typical Asian/brown society.

Identity crisis is the lack of sense of belonging and for most of us, we believe it begins with context to our culture that refuses to evolve with the needs of the time. The constant struggle to want to fit in and belong to our particular culture while traditionalists refuse to do accept the fact exhausting. You are always expected to fulfill certain career expectations or education expectations, and if you do not seem to agree with their concepts or prefer to do something else you are labeled as a rebel.

Due to several brown societies being as uptight as they are, they have made most of us adopt an entirely new identity. “Baaghi” (rebellious), one could say. We have internalized identifying as a rebel by this point since our ideologies and concepts do not seem to be appropriate enough for our specific cultures, giving rise to the constant battle with an identity crisis.

Furthermore, Identity crisis is a vast concept that stretches almost all over the world, it is different for everyone. While some struggle with their gender and sexual identities, some struggle with their cultural belonging. Indian Muslims, for example, have it particularly hard; they cannot seem to choose between the two identities are in constant conflict within both, also subjecting them to discrimination on multiple grounds.

All in all, this is a huge setback in our world. The youth is constantly in a position of conflict, trying to sideline their identity crisis to resolve the cultural crisis going on in our societies and attempting to revolutionize their concepts, after which they can go back to focusing on resolving their very own identity crisis.
