The Nagorno-Karabakh Dispute

Since the Soviet Union dismantled, things have gone wrong in different parts of the world. However, the Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict stands still till date. The dispute has been going on, over a territory known as Nagorno-Karabakh. The territory hosts majority of Armenians living there, who are usually found suppressing the Azerbaijan minority in the area. According to the census in 2015, there were 145,053 people living in Nagorno-Karabakh, with 144,683 being Armenian citizens. Nevertheless, it is most shocking for people to see that Nagorno-Karabakh is located in Azerbaijan only. Yet, the government that rules it is the Artsakh Military that are mostly ethnic Armenians. Quite confusing.

In 1991, after USSR broke down, the Armenians captured the Nagorno-Karabakh territory. Due to this forced capture, war erupted in the area, killing 30,000 people at least. However, there was a peace deal signed in 1994, which didn’t last for long. Since then, small skirmishes have taken place, killing hundreds of people and wounding more.

Recently, small skirmishes led to a full-fledged war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. As for now, more than 15 people have lost their lives whereas more than 100 people have already been wounded. The countries have started to choose their sides, but is that even worth it? Above all, the US is yet to chose a side, which most probably will be Turkey, keeping in view the recent developments between the two over Turkey-Syria crisis. Moreover, Russis has already sided with Armenia, hence ruling out US siding with it.

Now, Pakistan has chosen to be with Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh war. Russia, and most probably China, will be against them. Can we say, Pakistan is about to make the same mistake they made back in 1970s? It was highly important for Pakistan to be neutral between all this chaos, yet they are ending up in a war again.

Hope this war reaches to a concrete solution before it escalates in becoming one of the biggest war of 2020.
