UK Govt Asked To Deport Nawaz

The federal government has requested the UK government for the third time to deport Nawaz Sharif to serve his corruption sentence in a Pakistani prison.

The Federal Government has for the third time sent a letter to the UK government for the repatriation of Nawaz Sharif. The former premier is being summoned back to the country to serve out his sentence in a Pakistani prison for the corruption charges against him. This time the letter has been personally handed over to the British High Commissioner in Islamabad.

Nearly a year after Nawaz’s release from prison on medical grounds, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Adviser on Accountability Mirza Shehzad Akbar has penned the letter to British Home Secretary Priti Patel to deport Sharif. The letter was handed over after Nawaz made the highly-resented speech criticising the military over its alleged role in Pakistani politics.

The letter wrote, Sharif “has been responsible for pillaging the state and I trust that you will be supportive of our efforts to bring those responsible for corruption to account”. He added that the home secretary was “duty-bound” to deport the former premier.

The letter urged Patel to use her “extensive powers” to deport Nawaz and cited Britain’s immigration laws under which any individual sentenced to imprisonment of more than four years has to be deported to their country of origin.

The current circumstances were foreseen because a day after that PML-N rally in Gujranwala, Prime Minister Imran Khan declared he would get “even tougher” with the opposition and swore to make efforts to bring Sharif back and put him behind bars. “Now I will try my best to bring you back and put you in a common prison, not a VIP one,” the Premier said.

Pakistan official told the newspaper that the UK is yet to formally respond to the letter.
