Umar Akmal Files Appeal Against Three-Year Ban

Umar Akmal filed an appeal against PCB's decision to impose a three-year ban on him for not reporting the corrupt approaches made to him during PSL 2020.

Umar Akmal has filed an appeal against the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to impose a three-year ban on him for not reporting the two different corrupt approaches made to him during the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) 5th season. As soon as this was found out, Akmal had been sidelined from the PSL.

Originally, Umar Akmal had not hired a lawyer while defending his position against the disciplinary panel. However now he has hired the law firm which is being headed by prominent lawyer and political figure Babar Awan.

Umar Akmal’s appeal against the three-year ban has been filed under article 37 (titled “Panel of Adjudicators”) of PCB constitution, which is read with the article 7 of the PCB anti corruption code for participants. According to this article, the PCB shall maintain a panel of adjudicators for resolution of disputes, hearing of appeals against orders of the Board.

Umar Akmal’s Timeline From the Charges till the Appeal

On March 17, the PCB charged Akmal in two breaches of the anti-corruption clauses of 2.4.4.

On April 9, PCB referred the case to its disciplinary panel.

On April 17, PCB’s disciplinary panel imposed a three-year ban on Umar Akmal for all three forms of cricket.

On May 8, the disciplinary panel announced a detailed decision, in which Akmal had 14 days to file an appeal against the ban.

Now that Akmal has filed an appeal, PCB will appoint an independent adjudicator within the next 15 days, which will announce its verdict against Umar’s appeal in a month’s time. For now, Akmal has sought a stay from the judgment.
