VIP Culture in Pakistan: A Nuisance in the Country

It is a shame to see that the regular citizen has little to no voice in the country. The VIP culture in Pakistan is to blame for this injustice.

Time and time again, we have witnessed enormous traffic jams or road blockages because ‘someone important’ was passing by. This VIP culture in Pakistan has been here for a long time, and it has caused nothing but an inconvenience to the people, with 20+ cars parading around town to protect one car that has influential people in it.

Many times, we’ve seen roads being temporarily blocked by the authorities for hours because someone slightly powerful decided to take a trip. They hold no regard for the ‘aam admi’ and how such delays and blockages could affect their routines clearly- the needs of those in power are more important. Whether you have an emergency, or you’re getting late for school or office, it doesn’t matter. The VIP culture in Pakistan always wins.

Even though Prime Minister, Imran Khan, promised to abolish VIP culture as soon as he assumed power- his words held very little truth; the country is still a victim to VIP culture. Civil servants exploiting this VIP culture in Pakistan can be seen on several occasions like the video of an Army colonel’s wife that surfaced on the internet, where she was bashing the police for stopping her from breaking the traffic law.

What most civil servants seem to forget is that the position of power that they achieved is probably due to the votes of the general public in Pakistan. For them to think that they are somehow superior to us is ridiculous, it is the public that has brought them to the position that they have right now, and it is the public that holds all control to also strip them of it.

It is nothing but absurd, the VIP culture in Pakistan, as it only exists to intensify the classism and elitism in the country; to ensure that the regular citizens do not forget their place and that the people in power always remain as the ones above us. It is funny since Pakistan is said to be a democracy, and democracy is supposed to value the citizens of the state, who are the potential voters for the elections. However, everything here happens to either exploit or for personal gain.

The people are tired of such exploitation and have reached their limits for tolerance. What this VIP culture in Pakistan has done is that it has built such strong resentment within the people for any authoritative figure. Even the ones that may genuinely require protection or security personnel due to threats towards their wellbeing are criticized and seen as corrupt.

We have endured this VIP culture in Pakistan for too long; it is essential that we, as a nation, wake up and raise our voices as a united front. We must put our differences aside to bring about a change and act as a wakeup call for the state. In an attempt to announce that the people of Pakistan will no longer stay silent, the authorities must take into account the daily exploitations citizens goes through and provide us with equal rights.
