Why is Women’s Empowerment so Important?

Women's empowerment and gender equality are topics that have been debated about a lot. Even in the 21st century, women are still being deprived of their rights in most parts of the world.

Women’s empowerment and gender equality are topics that have been debated about a lot. There are many opinions regarding this, some are in support and some aren’t. It’s quite normal for people to disagree over such matters, but this isn’t a topic where opinions should be entertained. Even in the 21st century, women are still being deprived of their rights in most parts of the world.

Empowering women doesn’t mean that women will become superior. It simply means that equipping and allowing women to make life-determining decisions through the different problems in society. This is a privilege that most women are deprived of, especially in Pakistan. We live in a patriarchal society where many women cannot make decisions on their own and depend on their spouses.

women's empowerment

It gets worse in certain situations because the man of the house knows that his wife is dependent on him, so he sometimes misuses his power. There are multiple cases where the husband physically, mentally, and emotionally abuses her but she refuses to leave because she has no other support. The woman’s parents marry her off and tell her to never return as divorce will bring dishonor to the family name. It’s a sad situation, but that’s a lot of women are living in this country.

Such women how refuse to leave abusive marriages mostly do not have any educational background. Hence, they cannot support themselves if they leave their husbands. Their parents don’t want to support them out of fear of society’s comments and mockery. Therefore, we need to empower women so they can stand on their own feet and not rely on anyone else. They should be able to support themselves and their children when they come out of abusive marriages.

Empowerment can be done in many ways, it can be through education, awareness or any other means. It can even be in the form of financial or moral support, the purpose is to help such women become independent and able to make important life decisions. Privileged people may not understand the pain of being deprived of basic rights, but those who do will not go against the empowerment of women.
