Winter Games in Full Swing in Naltar, Gilgit Baltistan

With the winter season in full swing, Gilgit Baltistan has decided to go on with the annual winter games in Naltar organized by Pakistan Air Force.

Gilgit is in quite the happening state right now, with winter games and competitions of alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, and ice skating are underway in the beautiful valley of Naltar in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The winter games sports festival has been jointly organized by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and the Winter Sports Fed­era­tion of Pakistan. It started in Naltar on Tuesday and shall continue till Sunday.

Teams of PAF, Pakistan Army, GB Scouts, Swat, Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Higher Education Commission, Civil Aviation Authority, and the Alpine Club are participating in the winter games in Naltar.

Located near the Karakoram Range, Naltar is the oldest ski resort in Pakistan at 10,500 feet above sea level. Sports competitions are organized on Naltar snow during the winter season every year and around 100 talented skiers and other winter sports players from across the country are taking part in these competitions.

President, Dr. Arif Alvi is also said to pay a visit to the winter games in Naltar by the ending ceremony. According to a press rel­ease issued by PAF on Thur­sday, Waqar Junior’s outstanding performance in both Slalom and Giant Slalom events helped Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts lift the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Alpine Ski Cup.

He was in supreme form in both Slalom and Giant Slalom races and clinched the gold and a silver medal in both categories. In the Slalom category, former Olympian Moham­mad Abbas from PAF did a tremendous job on the slope and ended up getting the gold medal in the category in the winter games in Naltar.

Furthermore, the winter games in Naltar also awarded a silver medal in the Slalom category was won by GB Scouts’, Waqar Junior, while Noor Mohammad from Pakistan Army was awarded the Bronze medal. The Giant Slalom category was dominated by the skiers of GB Scouts, as besides Waqar Junior’s gold, the silver and bronze medals were also won by his teammates Sajjad Ahmad and Waqas Azam, respectively.
