Zindagi Tamasha Submitted to the Oscars by Pakistan

The controversial film directed and co-produced by Sarmad Khoosat, Zindagi Tamasha, has been submitted for an Oscar by the Pakistani Academy.

The time for Oscar submissions is here! This year, the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee has selected Zindagi Tamasha to be submitted to the Oscars in the ‘International Feature Film Award’ category for the 93rd Academy Awards.

The final nominees will be selected by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for all categories including the International Feature Film Award in February 2021. The fate of Zindagi Tamasha is in the hands of the Academy. The final list of the Oscars nominees will be released by 15th March 2021, and the Oscars ceremony will take place on 25th April 2021.

Zindagi Tamasha was directed and co-produced by Sarmad Khoosat, along with his sister Kanwal Khoosat written by Nirmal Bano. Zindagi Tamasha is a movie that sheds light on the intolerance in our society and is based on the life of a maulvi who was rejected from the community which is why it deserves to be submitted for an Oscar.

The movie features Arif Hassan, Eman Suleman, Samiya Mumtaz, and Ali Kureshi. It is shot during the holy celebrations in old Lahore, it is a brave and much-needed film which is why it was submitted for an Oscar. Zindagi Tamasha is an accurate portrait of a family and scorching political commentary.

The Oscar Committee for 2020 has already been announced, it includes several well-reputed names such as two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Faisal Kapadia, Mehwish Hayat, Hasan Shehryar Yasin, etc. The committee has collectively decided on submitting Zindagi Tamasha for the Oscars.

Speaking about the selection of Zindagi Tamasha for an Oscar, producer Kanwal Khoosat has said, “Zindagi Tamasha’s story reflects on regular people and is a poignant snapshot of life, family, the city of Lahore and the different values that people have. Onset, we felt passionate about working on a story that was representative of a real situation that regular people could face. Real emotions. Real issues. The announcement surely proves that we in Pakistan are ready to tell stories close to the heart. We are ready to represent our people, I cannot stop feeling proud of my team. We have worked countless hours to tell a truly Pakistani story. Many thanks to the committee for recognizing our efforts and acknowledging our film.”

Moreover, “All the heartache that Zindagi Tamasha gave me has somehow restored my faith in the power of art too: the sheer, almost physical power of art to make life imitate it. This announcement, for me, is a very bright light shining at the end of this dark tunnel of a year. I made this film in Pakistan and foremost, for Pakistan, for my people, and the misfortune that my people have remained deprived of it weighs quite heavy on my artistic conscience. Some pride is slowly kicking in though and, no matter how far we go with this official selection, Zindagi Tamasha will be representing all of us – our ‘Pakistan’. I feel honored on behalf of my entire team, and I am extremely grateful to the Oscar committee for finding it worthy enough.” said director Sarmad Khoosat.

Zindagi Tamasha is truly a masterpiece and an eye-opening story that deserves recognition and appraisal, and the submission for an Oscar is well-deserved!
