1,000-bed US Navy Hospital Ship Docked in New York

A hospital ship from US Navy called the USNS Comfort consisting of 1,000 beds was docked at Manhattan on March 30. This hospital ship has almost a dozen operating rooms along with ample bed space which will help in easing the burden of hospitals in New York. As the US reaches its peak of pandemic, they’re working tirelessly to find solutions to combat this virus.

However, it is to be noted that USNS Comfort will be used as a ‘referral hospital’. In a press release that was released on Monday, the US Navy mentioned that this hospital ship will not be taking care of COVID-19 patients but rather provide their expertise and care to non-COVID-19 patients. It will free up space in hospitals for COVID-19 patients as others will be treated in the hospital ship which in return will free up many intensive care units and ventilators.

Rear Adm. John Mustin, vice commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command said:

“Like her sister ship, USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), which recently moored in Los Angeles, this great ship will support civil authorities by increasing medical capacity and collaboration for medical assistance,”

He also mentioned:

“Not treating COVID-19 patients… but by acting as a relief valve for other urgent needs, freeing New York’s hospitals and medical professionals to focus on the pandemic.”

The hospital ship will coordinate with other hospitals and then patient transfers will take place. It is expected to provide care 24 hours. The hospital ship will not receive any walk-in patients expecting to be taken care of.

It’s a fact that New York is the US epicenter of the pandemic with over 67,000 cases out of 164,000. The US is now on first position in terms of most reported cases. There are over 5,000 recoveries and 3,000 deaths which suggests that the patients are healing but the US has been warned about the rapid deaths they will face.
