No relationship ever begins with your partner physically hurting you or showing early signs of having red flags. It never starts with them being incredibly manipulative and guilt tripping you. Even an abusive relationship begins with two people who are in love, who are deeply infatuated with each other and they believe that their partner is their happiness.

However, not every partnership stays this way in the long run. In the past 12 months, there have been 14.5% women in Pakistan who have experienced domestic violence whilst being in a relationship. To avert being one of these women, here are 4 major red flags to look out for of an abusive relationship and how to get out of it.

Jealousy 

People often believe its admirable when your partner is possessive about you and strives to know about your whereabouts. But, sometimes these actions can prove to be quite toxic. One should be careful of the signs when your partner becomes jealous to the point of tracking your location and accusing you of cheating. When they start following you around or depending on their friends to do it, this could easily lead to an abusive relationship.

Controlling Behavior 

Anyone who has a controlling nature will never be able to hide it for long. One of the red flags is when your partner wants adequate control over wherever you go. You have to take their permission before doing anything or wearing anything. God forbid, if you forget to inform them before heading out or if you ignore their instructions, this could lead to resentment and anger, which could lead to you eventually getting physically hurt.

Verbal Abuse 

Some partners tend to show early signs of being toxic by being verbally abusive. Verbal abuse is considered purely psychological, as the person who name calls you will feel like they have a higher status over you. Verbal abuse ultimately leads to physical abuse. If you are hit once, there’s a colossal chance that it will happen again.

Manipulation

This one is a no brainer. Manipulation is that one red flag that majority people are unable to see through. Its when your partner coerces you into doing their bidding, or when they make you feel guilty for something they are responsible for. Manipulation creates fear and the feeling of obligation, where you feel as though you owe them for every little mishap, even on their part. The moment you decide to call them out on it, they can easily pummel you.

If you have faced such dangerous signs in your relationship or are facing physical violence and are afraid of leaving, there’s no need to worry. Here are a few ways to get out of it.

Talk to someone. Be it a trusted friend, a family member or a coworker. The most important thing you should do when being stuck with a person you don’t know how to handle is by leaning on someone else, so they can help you leave the relationship without getting hurt in the process.

If your partner is extremely clingy and you are afraid they will never willingly let you go, you should memorize a list of emergency contacts who you can call incase the situation ever calls for it. You should also continue to remove them off your social media as well.

The government of Pakistan has stated that the Pakistan’s National Action Plan on Human Rights includes the ‘Protection of Women’. They have declared that a 24 hour helpline (1099) and Women Protection Centers have been organized in order to help women who are already facing domestic violence.

Never give up hope if you are stuck in an abusive relationship. Always keep a close tab on your partner, and if need be, seek help and get out.
