Karachi’s First Qawwali Night After the COVID-19 Outbreak

Karachi is scheduled to have its first Qawwali Night after the Coronavirus pandemic by Hamza Akram Qawwal in collaboration with Club 432.

Establishments that are at a high-risk are also opening their doors to the public as Karachi steers towards normalcy. Last week, educational institutes reopened after almost seven months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To end the hiatus and to motivate other live performers to do so as well, Qawwal, Hamza Akram Qawwal and brothers of the clan have announced a Qawwali night in collaboration with Club 432. The event is scheduled to take place on September 26 titled “Mast-e-Alast”. This event will be the very first live performance on this scale since the coronavirus outbreak.

Founder and Creative Director of Club 432, Akram and Farhan P had initially approached the Qawwals for something else, they were in the talks with Hamza asking him to teach at the club’s learning and performance centre but that led to them deciding on hosting a live Qawwali performance. Farhan P added that the team is working in collaboration with A for Aleph Studio for this particular event. Their input in the production and audio work is expected to add a lot of value to the live sound and live streaming of the night.

Akram noted that because for a lot of people, their bread and butter relies on playing shows and live performances, such activities must resume. In his opinion, “people are dying to hear live music” and attend qawwali nights so with the relevant SOPs, the way educational institutes, marriage halls and restaurants can reopen, musicians can resume with their work as well.

However, the organizers have emphasized that the safety of all their guests is the top priority. Necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safety and because of that only exclusive tickets are going up for sale so that a limited number of people attend the event. Akram elaborated that although the guest list will be concise and they will be bearing a loss, it is still better than not having anything at all. The capacity is of 250 people but only 75-100 people will be allowed so that all attendees can have a safe and wholesome experience with social distancing.

The scheduled Qawwali event is keeping the city’s fingers-crossed as the nation is currently experiencing another wave of the coronavirus. As educational institutes reopened last week, the cases increased forcing a lot of schools to shut down again.
