Pakistani Artist Arooj Aftab Gets Nominated For A Grammy Award
In an extremely proud moment for the country, Arooj Aftab gets nominated for the Best New Artist category at the upcoming Grammy Awards.
Last night saw the revelation of the upcoming Grammy Award nominations. However, one such nomination made headlines across the country.
That being the nomination of Arooj Aftab in the “Best New Artist” category. This announcement makes her the first Pakistani artist to be suggested for this particular category.
The singer faces tough competition as she is nominated alongside other talented artists. One of them being this year’s breakthrough artist Olivia Rodrigo, who dominated charts with her smash hit “Driver’s License”.
According to Billboard, Arooj Aftab studied music at Berklee College of Music. She became an indie sensation in Pakistan through her covers of very popular songs. These include Amir Zaki’s “Mere Pyar” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.
She is currently signed to New Amsterdam Records with whom she recorded and released her latest album “Vulture Prince”.
Billboard has also pointed out that some of her biggest inspirations included Mariah Carey, Billie Holiday and Begum Akhtar. The music website also suggested that she was a part of former US president Barack Obama’s playlist.
On a personal level, the singer has stated that she identifies as Queer. During an interview, she talked about her struggle of being different in a country like Pakistan.
While the nomination is monumental, she is not the first Pakistani to be nominated at the Grammy Awards. Other artists that have been nominated in the past include Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Nadia Ali.
In 2014, an album titled “Indus Raag” was nominated for the “Best World Music Album” at the 2015 Grammy Awards. The album was a compilation of the best Pakistani and Indian folk artists.
The 2022 Grammy Awards will be held on January 31 in Los Angeles. We hope that Arooj Aftab makes history and bags the win.
