Our Educational Sector- A Tribute

A small tribute to all the people of the educational sector who have gone above and beyond to make way to accommodate our youth.

When the Coronavirus pandemic hit the world, every institutional body was entirely clueless. With the lockdown going into effect immediately after it, there was a significant rise in the number of cases. Thereby, little to no time to anticipate, let alone prepare for the consequences this would have on our education. Countries may have spent millions of dollars on defense in the past, with the deadliest missiles available but no one in the world was prepared to deal with this crisis. However, it took a while for everyone to adapt to the necessary changes brought on by the virus to the best of their capabilities and it’s safe to say that the educational sector was amongst the few to tackle their share of the misfortune quite commendably.

Pakistan was amongst the first countries in the world to impose a widespread closure of schools due to Covid-19, starting from February 27, 2020, much earlier compared to other countries. Educationalists in our country were quick to adapt to the online model of education, juggling with e-learning applications, like Zoom and Google classroom mainly to ensure that the education of our country’s youth is not compromised.

This goes beyond to show that the educationalists of our country, our teachers have gone above and beyond to make way to accommodate our youth. Adapting to the online method of teaching was not an easy task because in-person teaching has always been primarily used within the educational sector. It was something very new and had to be adapted to within a very brief period of time. Teachers who have spent their whole lives teaching in-person found it difficult to adapt to operating Zoom classes. The new mode of teaching involved no in-person engagement at all and there is only a little you can manage through the computer screen. Moreover, creating digital content to grasp the attention of the students is quite time-consuming. Bilal Hameed, CEO of Cedar School adds that “The idea is not just content delivery, but also to keep students engaged,”.

Also, covid-19 has increased the inequalities that already existed within the educational sector of Pakistan leading to a rise in school dropout rates. Either parents do not deem online education beneficial enough to spend their money on or they can’t afford to buy laptops, tablets, etc to facilitate their children’s education. Thereby, in combating the issue the government also tried to play their part by launching ‘Teleschool’, aiming to combat the issue of educating the masses. However, it did not work out as well as they had hoped and it did not reach as many students.

Overall, the effort made by our teachers to adapt to the pandemic is commendable and truly deserves a tribute and our utmost appreciation!
