Every year there are so many slogans taken out of context from the Aurat March, causing a stature of criticisms and backlash. One such slogan is the “Mera Jism Meri Marzi”, where people were not able to process the fact that women are striving for bodily autonomy. The slogan was taken out of context and was twisted of its original meaning by people against the march, reducing the essence of bodily autonomy and consent to vulgarity and obscenity.

Till now whoever has tried to raise their voice to explain the actual meaning of the slogan has been put down and dismissed. However, Ali Gul Pir, a Pakistani rapper, television, and voice actor has released a new song inspired by the slogan called, Tera Jism, Meri Marzi, where he attempts to highlight the harassment women face on a daily basis. The music video depicts the toxic issues that are ingrained in our society and rarely talked about, such as a wife being beaten by her husband.

Gul Pir’s lyrics of the song Tera Jism, Meri Marzi reflect on different types of injustice faced by women in our society, from domestic violence, groping to street harassment. The lyrics start off from a male’s perspective, a guy seemingly claiming that he will grope women in public spaces and that he cannot help it. He claims that he has not done anything wrong and questions women marching as he has given them a roof, kitchen, and kids, what more can a woman ask for. “Khana Garam ho” is also a must for man and or else he will resort to domestic violence. The main chorus of the song stays ” Tera Jism, Meri Marzi”, where it is clear that it is a man’s world out there, and he has a right over everything including the women’s body.

The frame then shifts to the wife who is being oppressed, who finally decides to answer back and denounces all of the misogynistic notions entailed on her. Eva B, a young, niqabi rapper from Lyari is the voice of women here, with her lyrics mirroring that of Gul Pir’s. Eva B supports the choices made by women, whether it be wearing the hijab or completing their education, they have the right to fulfill their choices and dreams. The wife storms out and takes charge, fighting violence by violence, “Chup aurat achi, Bolne wali gandi, (A quiet woman is a good one, the one who speaks up is bad) a belief that is entrenched In our society, is finally being opposed.

Gul Pir’s performance to raise awareness and speak up against gender-based violence through one of his favorite mediums, a comedy sketch is applaudable and admirable.
