All Educational Institutes in Pakistan To Remain Closed Till Jan 10

Education Minister, Shafqat Mehmood has announced that all educational institutes in Pakistan will shut down from November 26 till January 10

In the much-awaited press conference, the nation’s education ministers met to review and give a final verdict on the shutdown of schools and extended winter vacations for the students. In the presence of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, Shafqat Mehmood deliberated that all educational institutes in Pakistan will switch to virtual learning from November 26 onwards.

The minister said that “home learning” will carry on from November 26 to December 24. “From December 25 till January 10, 2021, there will be winter vacations. Then from January 11, if the situation improves, we hope we can once again open all educational institutions.”

The decision came after the exponential rise in COVID-19 positive cases throughout the nation as it is currently experiencing the second wave of the pandemic. Moreover, public pressure also resulted in the desired outcome of the press conference as many cases arose after the reopening of educational institutes in Pakistan, putting the health of the youth at risk.

Shafqat Mehmood added, “Where possible, homework will be given out online. Where this is not possible, the provincial governments will decide the course of action. But all efforts will be made to make sure that education continues from home.”

The education minister stated that all examinations scheduled for December have been put on hold. “Exams will commence from January 15.” However, certain “professional exams” will continue as per schedule.

Dr Faisal Sultan confirmed that entrance exams as well will be held as per routine- “The reason for this is that it is possible to manage standard operating procedures (SOPs) for such exams.”

Furthermore, he affirmed that a ‘review session’ will be held at the beginning of the new year to ascertain the country’s COVID-19 outbreak so that the ministry can deliberate accordingly. “God willing, educational institutions will reopen from January 11,” Shafqat Mehmood added.

Although all educational institutes had remained closed from March to September, the pandemic’s second spell made the shutdown of these institutions inevitable. 19pc of total COVID-19 cases were recorded among students. The positivity ratio in educational institutions in Pakistan rose from 1.8pc to 3.3pc during the last week — a horrifying increase of 82pc.
