Bahrain’s Prime Minister Passes Away at The Age of 84

One of the world's longest-serving Prime Ministers, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Bahrain's Prime Minister, dies at the age of 84.

Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Prime Minister, one of the world’s longest-serving Prime Ministers passes away today, 11th November, at the age of 84-years old. He led the nation’s government for decades and even survived the 2011 Arab Spring protests!

The state-run agency announced Bahrain’s Prime Minister passing away, they revealed that he had been receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic in the United States of America. However, they refrained from releasing any extra information.

Prince Khalifa, power, and wealth were well-known throughout the nation. His official portrait hung for decades alongside the country’s ruler. He owned his private island where he met with several dignitaries, the island consisted of a marina park, a park specifically for peacocks and gazelles. Bahrain’s Prime Minister lived a lavish life until he passed away on Wednesday.

Prince Khalifa’s ruling and lifestyle represented a traditional style of Gulf leadership, one that granted patronage and favors for support of the Sunni Al-Khalifa family. This style was questioned in the 2011 protests by the island’s Shia majority and others, who protested him over long-running corruption allegations surrounding his rule.

“Khalifa bin Salman represented the old guard in more ways than just age and seniority,” said Kristin Smith Diwan, a senior resident scholar at the Washington-based Arab Gulf States Institute. “He represented an old social understanding rooted in royal privilege and expressed through personal patronage.”

Prince Khalifa was born in an influential family and has been ruling over Bahrain as Bahrain’s Prime Minister for over decades, however, as the years progressed he was met with several corruption allegations and witnessed multiple riots and protests to end his corrupt tenure.

Currently, he was admitted into the hospital, for a reason that is yet to be disclosed, and passed away at the age of 84, ending his tenure as Bahrain’s Prime Minister.
