Calls Made to Reset Sino-US Relations

Chinese diplomat Wang Yi said that the US and China could potentially work together on issues like climate change if damaged bilateral relations repair.

Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi stated in a press conference on Monday, February 22 that the Sino-US Relations could reset if both powers make amends to repair their damaged bilateral relations. In such a case, both China and the US could work on prevailing issues such as climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chinese state councillor affirmed that the Chinese capital, Beijing is ever-ready to restart beneficial relations with the US capital, Washington after tensions grew between the two world powers during the tenure of former US president, Donald Trump.

During the press conference, Wang Yi made several suggestions for steps that would create necessary conditions for cooperation and lead to the mending of Sin- US relations. Therein, he suggested Washington remove tariffs on Chinese goods and suppression of the Chinese tech sector.

The foreign minister, Wang Yi urged the US to respect and acknowledge China’s core interests and values, to stop defaming the ruling Communist regime, to stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and to stop “conniving” with separatist forces for Taiwan’s independence.

“Over the past few years, the United States basically cut off bilateral dialogue at all levels,” Wang Yi said.

“We stand ready to have candid communication with the US side, and engage in dialogues aimed at solving problems.”

Wang Yi highlighted a recent call made between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden as a positive step towards mending Sino-US relations.

Moreover, at the beginning of the conference, officials played footage of the “ping-pong diplomacy” of 1972 when an exchange of table tennis players cleared the way for then US President Richard Nixon to visit China.

Sino-US relations have tarnished have on multiple fronts such as trade conflicts and accusations of human rights violations against the Uighur Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region.

Biden has, however, voiced concern over Beijing’s “coercive and unfair” trade practices and endorsed genocide in Xinjiang. The Biden administration has signalled that it will maintain pressure on Beijing due to the aforementioned reasons.

Nonetheless, Biden is keen to cooperate with Beijing on issues like climate change and persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.
