It is Nazia Hassan’s 20th Death Anniversary and we would like to remember South Asia’s Queen of Pop on this day.
Nazia Hassan was born on April 3, 1965 and since then she had been shining bright like the star she was. From the age of 10 she had had a music career, which of course led to her and Zoheb Hassan’s success as a duo in the future. Together, the brother and sister sold 65 million records worldwide. One of their earlier songs, Disco Deewane, had made it to the British Charts.
Their other albums together include Star / Boom Boom, Young Tarang, and Hotline. Together they had shaped the pop music genre in Pakistan.
Nazia Hassan and Zoheb Hassan were also the first duo to host a pop-music stage show, called Music’89, which was produced by the legendary Shoaib Mansoor.
However, music was not the only field where Nazia Hassan was successful; during her musical career, Nazia had earned degrees in Economics and Law from Richmond, The American International University and the University of London respectively.
In her career as a musician, Nazia Hassan had won many awards – she is still considered the youngest recipient of the Filmfare Award at the age of 15, and she had won the Pride of Performance, which her mother received in 2002. Nazia was also appointed UNICEF’s cultural ambassador in 1991.
During her illustrious career, Nazia Hassan had brought happiness to many people’s faces, and her death saddens us even after 20 years. South Asia’s Queen of Pop has influenced many fans and musicians over the years, and it all started with her song Aap Jaisa Koi for the Bollywood movie Qurbani.
