Comic-Con Has Been Canceled Due to Coronavirus
For the first time ever in 50 years, San Diego Comic-Con International has been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak globally.
Comic-con is a multi-genre entertainment and comic book event which is held annually in San Diego, California, United States. It’s been taking place for the past 50 years without any intervention and people from around the globe attend it. Some dress up as their favorite characters and mingle with others and many celebrities also try to be a part of it.
This year, however, Comic-Con will not be taking place for the first time in 50 years. Keeping the current health crisis in mind, the organizers have decided that it can’t go ahead safely. United States has been declared as the epicenter for the virus, hence, it’s in the state of an emergency as death toll reaches over 37,000.
In a statement released by Comic-Con, they said:
“Recognising that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, [the organisers] had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer.”
The statement also further said:
“Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.”
San Diego Comic-Con will now be held in 2021, the statement added. All those who have bought the tickets for this year can either ask for a refund or get their badges transferred to next year. Not only Comic-Con but many other events have suffered at the hands of the pandemic. Many movies haven’t seen the light of day as release dates have either been canceled or postponed.
