Court Receives Threats During Daniel Pearl’s Case
The legal counsel of American journalist Daniel Pearl's parents revealed that the trial court hearing his murder case & its witnesses have received threats
On Tuesday, January 12, the legal counsel of the American journalist Daniel Pearl’s parents told the Supreme Court that the trial court that heard his murder case and its witnesses have received threats.
Headed by Justice Musheer Alam, a three-judge bench was hearing an appeal filed last year by Pearl’s parents against and the Sindh government against a Sindh High Court that decided to acquit the main suspect in Daniel Pearl’s case, Omar Saeed Sheikh, and three others. During today’s hearing, Faisal Siddiqui, the legal counsel of Pearl’s parents, said that the case has been shifted from Karachi to Hyderabad due to the threats that they have been receiving.
Faisal Siddiqui also argued that terrorism cases were filed on the basis of “confessional statements”. He urged the court to “create a balance between the basic rights of the petitioner and the accused”.
Omar Saeed Sheikh’s legal representative, Mehmood Sheikh, in his arguments, labelled the case as “false and a result of pressure”. He stated that the United States had sent the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents to tail Pearl and added: “No country sends its investigative institutions after its ordinary citizens.”
Moreover, Mehmood argued that the witnesses presented by the prosecution “gave contradictory statements during the investigation and [in] court”.
“Daniel Pearl was an American citizen, that’s why the evidence was planted,” Mehmood added.
Mehmood said that the case states that the “murder conspiracy” was devised in a hotel in Rawalpindi. However, the hotel’s receptionist had said that he did not know Omar Sheikh, Mehmood argued, adding that “confessional statements were extracted from the suspects through torture.”
Pearl’s murder case has been adjourned until Wednesday (tomorrow).
