COVID-19 in Italy vs Pakistan – Is there a connection?

As more cases are reported in Italy, should we be more cautious in Pakistan?

As nine more COVID-19 cases have been identified in Pakistan, one cannot help but wonder whether there is any correlation amongst the cases in Pakistan and any other country, like Italy.

Out of these, 7,985 cases are active at the moment. Their death rate had been dropping till March 5th. However, since then we are seeing a high level of acceleration in deaths (as of March 9, the death rate was recorded at 39.01%). The recovery rate, while higher than the death rate, has begun to fall (as of March 9, it was recorded at 60.99%). This news goes hand in hand with the recent study that stated that COVID-19 has begun to spread in two strains – one of which attacks aggressively.

How does the COVID-19 situation in Italy relate to Pakistan?

Image result for COVID-19 pakistanWhile there are only 16 officially reported cases of COVID-19 in Pakistan compared to 9,172 in Italy, we don’t know what rate it is spreading at. Seeing that the rest of the world is falling ill to it rapidly, it won’t be a far stretch to be cautious about coronavirus in Pakistan.

One of the main reasons impacting Italy is that around 22.75% of the population is aged above 65. Researches highlight that old age tends to be targeted by the illness more than younger people. However, even if Pakistan has a younger population, many of us have immune systems that are not as strong as they should be. Major reason for the rapid spread of various diseases include over-crowded cities, low health awareness, unsafe drinking water, and inadequate sanitation.

While the government is taking many steps to ensure that it is curbed as much as possible, we need to raise more awareness about why such steps are being taken. For example, educational institutions were closed down so that COVID-19 spreads less, however we see students going out for hangouts. Let’s cooperate with the government to avoid coronavirus.
