PSL 5 – Quetta Gladiators Got Treated Unfairly?

Owner Nadeem Omar claims that compared to every other team, the Gladiators are being given a more hectic schedule.

Quetta Gladiators, the 2019 winners, have not been in their best form this time around. While the Gladiators won 2 out of 3 of their matches in Karachi, they have not had much of a luck when the PSL games shifted to the Punjab stadiums.

After gaining victory in their first match in Rawalpindi, their next three games saw them go to Multan and Lahore before returning to Rawalpindi within six days. Their last game was in Lahore on Saturday and they play their next game there against the leading team Multan Sultans on Wednesday before playing their last game in Karachi against Karachi Kings on Sunday.

According to Nadeem Omar, the owner of the QG franchise, the treatment against his team is unfair.

“We have been airborne most of the time with other teams getting ample rest in between games. We have no home ground alright but a temporary home ground could have been allotted to keep the team at one of the host cities of Karachi, Lahore, Multan or Rawalpindi for a longer period. Frequent travel, insufficient rest and practice opportunities have reflected on the team’s performance which was better in the first phase when it was in Karachi.

Were these issues not discussed before PSL started?

“Initially when our manager shared the travel itinerary, I thought every team was facing the same schedule but we only realised later that we were the most-affected team,” Nadeem said. “We’ve spent hours on airports, travelled on army aircrafts and have not even got a chance to hold proper practice sessions in the last 10-12 days.”

The owner stated that many of the fans believed that they were just offering excuses for their poor performance. He wanted his “family of fans” to know the truth.

How did the PCB respond to the Gladiators’ Accusation?

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official stated that Gladiators’ tough schedule was due to many reasonable issues.

“The entire PSL in Pakistan was a large scale challenge and matters will definitely improve in the future. Availability of venues, aircraft tickets, accommodation and host of other logistical issues were there. The concerns raised by the Gladiators weren’t dismissed outright and the board tried its best to manage it as amicably as possible.”
