Cuties: Netflix Apologizes for Sexualizing Adolescent Girls

After the backlash, Netflix apologized and also changed the cover for cuties. It did not disclose whether the artwork was made in-house or by an agency.

The French-language award-winning film, Cuties, which will soon be available on the popular streaming website and app, Netflix, has received a lot of backlash. The reason behind this backlash is the poster that Netflix used, which was sexualizing young adolescent girls. The girls were wearing revealing clothes and posing provocatively.

This movie has won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance this year. The story is about a young 11-year-old girl, Amy, who joins a dance group and becomes aware of her sexuality. However, many have said that the movie has depicted and handled sensitive topics very sensibly. But the promotional cover defeated the purpose and made the storyline seem different than what it actually is.

A twitter user said:

“It is so revealing that the first major @netflix original to centre young Black girls hinges on explicitly sexualising 11 year old children. Whether it’s acting or music, a sexualised image is too often the price of mainstream success for Black women & girls. Disgraceful”.

A representative of Netflix released a statement shortly after the internet responded to the promotional poster saying:

“We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which premiered at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description.”

After the backlash, Netflix apologized and also changed the cover. It also did not disclose whether the artwork was made in-house or by an agency. But, the good news is that the promotional posts are not using the cover that received negative feedback. It’s all set to be released on September 9, 2020. The film is rated 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics generally praised it for its handling of sensitive topics.
