Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity With P&G

P&G has set the bar high after embracing diversity and inclusion by employing brand ambassadors with disabilities for Ariel and Safeguard.

According to official statistics and extensive research, it has been concluded that around 31 million people in Pakistan are living with some form of disability. Pakistan ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2011 which made it compulsory for a 2 per cent employment figure to be implemented at every tier of an establishment. Moreover, under orders from the supreme court, Pakistani authorities are obligated to embrace diversity and inclusivity by providing essential resources including accessible infrastructure, assistive technology and any other form of support so that disabled people with disabilities, once employed by a company, can effectively perform their job duties.

However, despite the laws, disabled people with disabilities are continued to be stigmatised and excluded from employment opportunities in Pakistan. There is a dire need for corporations to embrace inclusivity and diversity to counter this problem.

P&G, a multinational corporation, markets high-quality brands to Pakistani consumers and has grown to be among the country’s most fast-moving consumer goods companies. With big brands such as Ariel, Olay, Safeguard, Head & Shoulders among many others, P&G has taken the initiative of embedding diversity and inclusivity in their philosophy.

P&G is taking measures to ensure they are in complete conformity with Pakistan’s international human rights obligations to embrace diversity and inclusivity. Ariel and Safeguard in Pakistan stepped up to the challenge and in a not-so-traditional bold step instigated the concept of fair hiring especially for disabled people with disabilities to empower “uniquely abled” individuals in their rawest form. The two brands hired 4 talented individuals with different abilities, unique stories and ensuring an equal sex representation.

All 4 employees were provided with appropriate talent building resources including quality training in sign language, technological solutions about software and hardware, depending on the requirements of their job and convenience of mobility with transport from work to home.

This initiative taken by Ariel and Safeguard to embrace diversity and inclusivity has been highly commended by the Pakistani public. P&G aims to lead the way for more revolutionary change in Pakistan.
