Farewell, TikTok Banned in Pakistan

Today, Friday October 9, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has taken the step of banning the viral video-sharing app TikTok for immoral content.

As of Friday, October 9, 2020, The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has banned TikTok for “immoral and indecent” content.

The PTA took this step after receiving several complaints, court petitions calling for its ban in light of the indecent and immoral content being promoted on the video-sharing application. They said that earlier they had given a final notice to the app in July giving them plenty of time to respond. PTA had asked them to moderate the “unlawful online content” on their application.

Therein, PTA stated that they had no choice but to ban TikTok in Pakistan after the other party “failed to fully comply”.

Although the news is quite unfortunate, however, there is good news for all the TikTok stars in Pakistan. PTA has stated that the decision is not permanent and “is open for engagement” given the app comes up with a mechanism to moderate the content being shared on the platform.

At the time of the July notice, Imran Khan’s focal person on social media, Arslan Khalid tweeted saying, “The recent exploitation of female TikTokers, the objectification and sexualisation of young girls on TikTok was causing huge pain to the parents & was proving detrimental for our society”.

Previously, TikTok revealed that Pakistan is among the top 5 countries where videos were removed videos over violations of its community guidelines. As a result, 3 million videos had been removed from TikTok in Pakistan
