First Health Worker Dies in Sindh due to COVID-19

Sindh's Health Department had shut down OPDs at all the hospitals and clinics in Malir district to curtail spreading the virus in the area, after Dr Soomro and three other persons tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr Abdul Qadir Soomro, a senior health worker based in Sindh, died in Indus Hospital due to COVID-19. He was moved to a ventilator after his symptoms started to worsen. Many of his friends and colleagues do not believe that he caught it from any of his patients as he was a skin specialist in Gulshan-e-Hadeed.

Dr Abdul Malik, who belongs to the Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA), stated, “Dr Soomro was a former medical officer of the Pakistan Steel Mills and respected in the fraternity for his very good medical practice in different private facilities of Malir district.” Soomro was the former President of PIMA.

Current President of PIMA, Dr Azeemuddin, called Soomro’s death a great loss, and claimed, “as for PPE, we are trying on our own to help our fraternity to some extent and in this regard have provided PPE to several hospitals in collaboration with Dua Foundation. But this task is so huge that it can only be completed by the state and not by any organisation. So we appeal to the government to support their front-line soldiers in this fight.”

Since hospitals do not have enough PPE, it only being provided to those who are working in the emergency wards and isolation wards, and not to those who are conducting the OPDs. Many health workers across Sindh are protesting for the PPEs as they do not wish to die from COVID-19 while treating the patients.

Sindh’s Health Department had shut down OPDs at all the hospitals and clinics in Malir district to curtail spreading the virus in the area. This happened after Dr Soomro and three other persons tested positive for COVID-19. There was also a complete ban placed on OPDs at all hospitals in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, but emergencies at the hospitals would remain open and health workers at all facilities would be attending their duties.
