Google Searches for ‘Good News’ at Record High

Google trends reveal that the searches for 'good news' have reached an all-time high ever since that start of Google in 2004.

Coronavirus has left everyone feeling somber and gloomy. Amidst the pandemic, people are looking for news or something that would spark hope, something that can make them feel relaxed and joyous. The continuous lockdown and sitting at home with stressful news has led to an increase in the google searches of ‘good news’. This word has hit a record high since the start of 2020.

According to Google Trends, a website by Google which helps in identifying trends of all time along with timelines and convenience of comparison, the term ‘good news coronavirus’ has been searched the most this year, especially in April.

The following graph shows the interest in good news ever since the inception of Google itself, which was in 2004. The results are shocking but expected.

The Good News Network, which is a news platform that started in the 1990s and shares all the inspiring stories, has seen a hike in traffic in the past months. Their traffic has nearly tripled in the past month with over 10 million visitors, according to founder and editor Geri Weis-Corbley.

John Krasinki from The Office has also started a YouTube channel by the name Some Good News, which may also be adding to the recent google searches. However, It’s more likely that Krasinski is benefiting from the trend, though.

We all are running away from the negative news during this time. It puts a toll on our mental ability subconsciously. Some can digest it whereas some don’t have that power to do so. Psychologists believe that humans are conditioned to pay closer attention to negative news because it could force them to change their behavior. It’s called conditioning is Psychology where humans or even animals can be taught to learn a new skill or trick.
