Hamza Shehbaz Files Petition for Bail due to COVID-19
Hamza Shehbaz, the current Leader of the Opposition in Punjab is petitioning for bail from Lahore High Counrt (LHC) on the basis of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hamza Shehbaz, the current Leader of the Opposition in Punjab is petitioning for bail from Lahore High Counrt (LHC) on the basis of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lack of social distancing and self-isolation already makes it a health hazard for the inmates in this day of age, let alone bringing in someone from outside.
A copy of the petition was acquired by Dawn.com, which stated:
“The confined space of a prison makes it virtually impossible to implement the policy of social distancing. The prisoners are vulnerable and exposed to suffer irreparably in case of an outbreak. God forbid a prison outbreak is likely to present potentially deadly risk to its inmates.”
The petition for Hamza Shehbaz’s bail not only referred to COVID-19, but also mentioned a lack of references being booked against the Leader of the Opposition in Punjab by NAB, despite the fact that they had arrested him 10 months ago.
Prison Conditions in COVID-19 in Pakistan
Islamabad High Court ordered the release of over 400 prisoners as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rise throughout the nation. IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah issued the order and said a committee, consisting of officials from three bodies – would be established to determine the bail of the accused. “In this situation, prisoners cannot be kept in isolation. Prisoners have the right to survive too,” he added.
In Sindh, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has announced that the Government has decided to release prisoners charged with minor offences who have finished their sentences but are unable to pay their penalty bonds. The Sindh Government will be paying their penalty bonds.
In addition to this, CM Shah has also directed the Inspector General of Prisons to ensure that there is distance put between the remaining prisoners during the outbreak of COVID-19, and that proper hygiene is practiced across all prisons in Sindh. He stated that the Sindh Government has already allocated funds for the provision of health facilities to the prisoners.
