Himalayan Bears Shifted to Jordan Sanctuary

After several notices from the Islamabad High Court, the two rare Himalayan bears have been shifted to Jordan from the Islamabad zoo.

The two Himalayan Bears in Islamabad, Suzie, and Bubloo, are finally being shifted from the Marghazar zoo to the wildlife sanctuary in Jordan. Upon orders from the Islamabad High Court (IHC), the bears were flown out from Islamabad on Thursday, 18th December.

The IHC had ordered the management to safely shift the Himalayan bears to a wildlife sanctuary in Jordan where they can lead a healthier and happier life. Moreover, sources confirmed that Bubloo and Suzie were flown through Qatar Airways.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) made sure to make special arrangements for the shifting of the Himalayan bears. Moreover, an international animal rights organization named Four Paws was ahead of every step, overseeing the bears’ departure.

Before the two Himalayan bears shifted to Jordan, Kaavan the Elephant, Pakistan’s only Asian Elephant, was sent to Cambodia from the Islamabad zoo.

Suzie and Bubloo’s transfer came after the IHC disposed of contempt of court petition on December 15th, against the board managing the Islamabad Zoo and the climate change ministry after it was told that the two Himalayan bears at the facility will be shifted to a sanctuary in Jordan.

In an order penned by the IHC CJ, Athar Minallah, the court noted that the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), in a meeting of its board on December 11th, should initiate the relocation of the two Himalayan brown bears to an appropriate sanctuary. After suggestions from several experts, the wildlife board decided to shift them to an appropriate sanctuary in Jordan till a facility can be established in Pakistan that will meet their behavioral, physiological, and social needs.

IHC further announced that the bears were in terrible condition here and deprived of their natural habitat. Chief Justice further said that it was inhumane to keep these bears in such conditions, which is why it was wise to shift them to Jordan. “They have remained caged in the Marghazar Zoo for over a decade,” he noted, adding, “A zoo, no matter how well equipped, is no less than a concentration camp for living beings.”
