Human Rights Activist Jalila Haider to receive IWOC

Human Rights Activist from Hazara Community wins IWOC Award for her work

Jalila Haider, a human rights activist in Balochistan, founded “We the Humans – Pakistan”. She uses her position as a Human Rights Attorney to fight for the rights of the persecuted Hazaras in Balochistan. She specialises in women’s rights and uses the organisation to uplift undefended women. Furthermore, she provides free legal and counselling services to impoverished women.

Jalila’s many accomplishments have given her the title of “Iron Lady”. Moreover, she is the President of Women Democratic Front. In this position, she has also led Aurat Marches in her region. She held a peaceful hunger strike for the human rights of the Hazara Community. BBC included her in the 100 Most Influential Women of 2019.

Her other accomplishments include being selected as an Atlantic Council Emerging Leaders of Pakistan Fellow in 2014, becoming a member of the first batch of Pakistan Social Entrepreneurs by Rajeev Circle Fellows in 2015, and was Swedish Institute Young Connectors of the Future Fellow in 2016. She was also named as one of the women in “News Women Power 50” in 2015.

There are 11 other women from all over the world who are receiving the Women of Courage Award. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be hosting the ceremony with USA’s First Lady Melania Trump giving a speech. All of these women recognised have shown exceptional courage and leadership in fighting for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment, often at great personal risk and sacrifice. These women will be a part of the Inter­national Visitor Leader­ship Programme (IVLP), visiting several cities before assembling in Los Angeles again on March 16.

In addition to Jamila, the other honorees who fight for human rights include Zarifa Ghafari from Afghanistan, Lucy Kocharyan from Armenia, Shahla Humbatova from Azerbaijan, Ximena Galarza from Bolivia, Claire Ouedraogo from Burkina Faso, Sayragul Sauytbay from China, Susanna Liew from Malaysia, and Amaya Coppens from Nicaragua.
