Imran Khan Wants Chemical Castration to be Imposed Against Rapists

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved a law on chemical castration of rapists asserted that there should not be any delay in implementing the law.

On Tuesday, November 24, the federal cabinet, whilst taking notice an exponential rise in crimes against women and children, approved the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Ordinance, 2020, and the Pakistan Penal Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. Moreover, exemplary punishment to rapists, including chemical castration and hanging were asserted.

Prime Minister Imran Khan directed all law ministry officials and other concerned departments to finalise the implementation of the approved laws with immediate effect. “Such crimes are not tolerated in any civilised society,” he told the cabinet.

In a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Information Minister, Shibli Faraz acknowledged the rising sexual assault and rape cases whilst assuring that no assailant will go unscathed under the new stricter laws. Moreover, for the first time in the country’s history, the definition of rape had been changed by incorporating “transgender” and “gang-rape” in it. “Gang-rape has been included in it,” Shibli said. “The [proposed] law would prove to be an effective deterrent.”

Shibli Faraz added that the Law and Justice Minister, Barrister Faroogh Naseem is fine-tuning the ordinance, affirming finalisation to be complete within a week. Furthermore, the proposed laws also expostulate the inhumane “two-finger” test that is conducted by doctors involving testing for laxity of vaginal muscles with fingers.

The law pertaining to the chemical castration of convicted rapists was approved by Prime Minister Imran Khan. Although some federal ministers wanted harsher punishments like public hanging, the premier asserted on chemical castration instead. Senator Faisal Javed Khan even tweeted about the soon-to-be imposed law.

Regardless, Information Minister, Shibli Faraz refrained from using the words, chemical castration, maintaining that he did not want to use the words in case the process is not part of the ordinance.
