International AIDS Day

December 1 marks the day for those who have been or are struggling with HIV/AIDS. Here are few things you need to know about it.

AIDS is an acronym for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, which is caused by HIV. HIV and AIDS are different. While AIDS is a syndrome, HIV is the virus that carries it. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), weakens the immune system, hence weakening the ability to fight disease. Being a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STI), HIV/AIDS is usually caused by unprotected sex.

The causes for this can vary from unprotected sex only. It can also be transferred through infected blood % or fluids. Another reason can be the usage of contaminated objects already carrying the virus. The symptoms include weight loss, fatigue, mouth ulcers and more.

According to the reports, Pakistan has been a great victim of this disease. According to the reports published in 2018, 160,000 people are infected with HIV. Around 6,400 have lost their life to this disease. And amongst them, 14% knew they were infected and only 10% were taking treatment. In the given amount, 30% of those effected were women. The rest were all men. So we can say, men have caught more AIDS than women.

It is high time, that we start to take notice on this thing. There should be proper education, sex education, in Pakistan. Kids should know the consequence and should be told how to avoid such disease.

Just by the way, here are few ways you can save yourself from HIV/AIDS. If you are wounded, clean the area with alcohol, or Dettol, to protect the wound. In case you are getting a blood transfusion, make sure the blood is checked for HIV. In a hospital, or even at a shop, make sure the syringes being used are packed and safe. And moms giving birth should get treatment before delivery.

Lastly, Prevention is better than cure.
