Is the Chief of Al Qaeda Ayman al-Zawahiri Dead?

Arab media has been speculating that Ayman al-Zawahiri, the chief of Al Qaeda has passed away in Ghazni, Afghanistan due to natural causes.

After the death of Osama bin Laden, chief of the terrorist group Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri had assumed the position. However, the Arab media is speculating that the chief of al-Zawahiri is now dead- even though Al Qaeda is keeping quiet and is yet to confirm this news.

Ayman al-Zawahiri is probably one of the most-wanted terrorists in the world. The US government has charged him with murdering its nationals including conspiracy to murder US nationals outside the United States.

Arab news further says that Ayman al-Zawahiri died in Afghanistan, Ghazni, due to natural causes. He was last seen in a video message on the anniversary of the 9/11 attack in the USA.

Moreover, several sources in Pakistan and Afghanistan confirmed the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri. An Al-Qaeda translator said Zawahiri had died last week in Ghazni. “He died of asthma because he had no formal treatment.”

There is, however, no confirmed date of his death. Some say that he died due to asthma, others say that he’s been dead for over a month in Afghanistan and some Al Qaeda members have already performed his funeral prayers. Sources refused to elaborate whether his body was buried, and where it was. All they have been saying is, “What we know is that he was having some breathing issues and has passed away somewhere in Afghanistan.”

Sources all over the world, in the USA, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have heard the news that Ayman al-Zawahiri was extremely ill, however, none of them are sure whether he has died. “He was unable to manage his dialysis, but I still need to confirm if he has died.” The US has said that it has received news of Zawahiri’s death but had not verified it yet.

The death of Ayman al-Zawahiri puts Al Qaeda in a risky state, it is no longer in its true form. After the attack on Bin Laden, the group was in shambles until al-Zawahiri took over. However, whoever the new chief is must be competent enough to carry the group’s potency. Al Qaeda has been recently overshadowed by the extremist group Daesh; which sought to carve out the caliphate in Iran and Syria and planned several coordinate attacks on Europe.

There is a lot of speculation that Saif al-Adel, a former lieutenant-colonel in the Egyptian armed forces who joined the Egyptian jihadist movement in the 1980s will be named the chief of Al Qaeda after Ayman al-Zawahiri. “Adel played a crucial role in building Al-Qaeda´s operational capabilities and quickly ascended the hierarchy,” the US-based Counter Extremism Project (CEP) think tank said.
