Is There an Upgrade in the Diplomatic Ties Between India and Pakistan?
India and Pakistan might possibly see an upgrade in their diplomatic ties which had witnessed damage after the Narendra Modi government.
In light of the information provided by multiple sources, it seems as if India and Pakistan might be seeing an upgrade in their diplomatic relations which had deteriorated after the Narendra Modi government.
According to official sources, India and Pakistan are now expected to bring back high commissioners in each other’s capitals, after downgrading their missions in 2019. It is also speculated that New Delhi may allow a Saarc summit to take place in Islamabad later in 2021. The summit has been pending since 2016 following tensions between India and Pakistan over the Uri attack. In such a scenario, Modi will most likely visit Islamabad to attend the summit.
Surprisingly, on Thursday, February 25, a day before the second anniversary of the Balakot airstrikes, India and Pakistan signed a joint statement, following talks between the Directors Generals of military operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan, who agreed to “address each other’s core issues and concerns which have the propensity to disturb peace and lead to violence”.
“Both sides agreed to strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the Line of Control and all other sectors with effect from the February 24/25 midnight,” the statement read.
India and Pakistan’s DGMOs conversed in the wake of a series of dialogue held between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Aide on National Security, Moeed Yousaf.
The spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Anurag Srivastava, reiterated that India desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan. “We have always maintained that we are committed to addressing issues, if any, in a peaceful bilateral manner. On key issues, our position remains unchanged,” he said.
