Karachi: First Commercial Trans-Led Tailor Shop
Nisha Rao's Trans Pride Society announced the inauguration of Pakistan's first commercial trans-led tailor shop in Karachi.
In a proud moment for Pakistan, transgender lawyer Nisha Rao’s NGO Trans Pride Society announced the inauguration of Pakistan’s first commercial trans-led tailor shop in Karachi on Sunday, March 21.
The Trans Pride Society is an NGO run by Nisha Rao. She is the primary figure behind the project who also announced the exciting news on her social media platforms.
The Trans Pride Tailor Shop is located at UG Shop No 67,70, Jinnah Complex Apartment and Shopping Mall on MA Jinnah Road in Saddar.
While sharing the inauguration of this monumental project, Nisha Rao expressed her feelings on her Instagram page:
“A momentous beginning!
Trans Pride Society proudly announces the inauguration of the Trans Pride Tailor Shop.
Trans Pride Stitch Shop is the first commercial tailor shop in Karachi solely run by members of the transgender community.
Earlier today, on 20 March 2021, the General Secretary of the Karachi Bar Association, Advocate Aamir Nawaz Waraich and Nuzhat Shirin, Chairperson of Sindh Commission on the Status of Women, our Chief Guests attended the opening ceremony and cut the ceremonial ribbon.
A big congratulations to our tailors and members of the Trans Pride Society on this new venture! We wish you lots of success in your new journey,” the ecstatic Nisha Rao penned.
In 2020, Nisha Rao became the first transgender law graduate in Pakistan. Now she has established her own NGO, the Trans Pride Society which is doing great.
After years of being marginalized and discriminated against, the transgender community is slowly entering the mainstream media narrative in Pakistan. Therefore trans-led businesses like this tailor shop are important not just for representation but also to normalise something that should have been a norm decades ago.
