The Karachi Bar Association (KBA) has announced that they will not be suspending any protesting lawyer’s licence, as per the amendments to the Legal Practitioner’s Act that were proposed by the Sindh Government.

Along with the other office bearers at KBA, General Secretary G.M. Korai stated that the amendments to Section 41 of the Legal Practitioner’s Act that provides for suspending protesting lawyers’ licences, would be rejected.

Korai believes that this amendment will not allow the upcoming generation of lawyers would not be allowed to exercise their right to vote in the bar associations’ elections for a period of two years.

He added that he could not understand why the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) was trying to make it difficult for lawyers for the new lawyers. Korai stated that when the matter was discussed with PBC, the latter tried to assure KBA that the new lawyers will not lose their rights to vote in the polls.

GM Korai said that the legal fraternity will fight against any such amendments to change the act, just like they have moved against any anti-lawyer movements.

According to the KBA General Secretary, they had contacted all district judges, the IGP Sindh and other police officials via letters to urge them to take action against the judicial staff, “fake” lawyers and police officials, involved in corruption and other illegal practices in the district courts.

He claimed that the governing body in the KBA had caught fake lawyers and even FIRs were also lodged against them.

He lamented that letters were sent to the provincial home secretary and the IGP Sindh over the issue of security at the courts, but no replies had been received as of yet.

Do you think that the KBA should be fighting against amendment to suspend licences of any protesting lawyers in the future?
