LHC Banned Plastic Bags in Lahore
Lahore High Court has banned plastic bags in Lahore and ordered to implement it in the next two weeks. Soon plastic bags will be banned in all of Punjab.
The Lahore High Court has banned the use of polythene bags across Lahore. The court has ordered to implement orders and completely get rid of polythene bags within two weeks. Court has adjourned the hearing till 13th March. It is possible that in the next phase banning plastic bottles will take place. Polythene bags are banned in Lahore for now, but soon enough they will be banned all over Punjab.
There are several reasons why I support this cause. Most of them are related to our environment as polythene bags prove to be one of the major reasons behind an increase in global warming and climate change. However, there’s a lack of awareness in Pakistan regarding the harmful and toxic effects of plastic.

- Since the 1950s, almost 8.3 billion plastic has been produced. It has significantly doubled over the last 50 years.
- According to National Geographic, 73% litter and garbage found on beaches worldwide is plastic.
- Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes.
- Around the world, nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute.
- It takes 500 years or more for plastic to degrade, and even then it doesn’t completely dissolve but rather break down into tiny microparticles.
- Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
- One million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans.
- 50% of the plastic that we use is single-use, which is then thrown away after one use.
- Up to 80 percent of ocean plastic pollution enters the ocean from land.
- One in three leatherback sea turtles have been found with plastic in their stomachs.
I really appreciate big brands like Sapphire and Generation because they’ve been conscious of the environment. They’ve launched campaigns revolving around this topic and I feel like more brands need to raise awareness. Why I ask brands to contribute to such initiatives? It’s because a lot of people follow them and get inspired.
