Matchroom Announces Canelo Alvarez vs Callum Smith
After a significant delay, Matchroom Boxing has finally announced the much-anticipated battle between Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith on 19th December.
Matchroom Boxing has finally announced a date and venue for the most anticipated super-middleweight title clash! Canelo Alvarez vs Callum Smith is all set to take place on the 19th of December in San Antonio.
The 268-pound fight will take place at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and only a limited audience will be entertained into the venue keeping in mind social distancing and the global pandemic.
Canelo Alvarez says he’s excited to be back in the arena where won against Austin Trout in 2013 and became the unified junior middleweight champion. “I am thrilled to be back at the Alamodome and very thankful to be fighting in front of my fans on December 19,” Canelo said. “I have great memories of my previous bouts in Texas, and I expect this to be a special fight to close out the year.”
This will be Canelo Alvarez’s first fight since 2019 when he won the light heavyweight championship, however, it is his second match in the 168-pound category. His first was against Rocky Fielding via a three-round TKO in 2018.
Moreover, Canelo Alvarez’s opponent, Callum Smith has been looking forward to this match. Smith will also be fighting after a long break; his last match was in 2019 where he defeated John Ryder through a unanimous decision. However, it will be his second match in the USA, and he’s excited to give it his best shot!
