Case Against Abbasi in Haque’s Appointment in PSO: NAB

NAB chapter in Karachi has launched another case against former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for illegally appointing Sheikh Imran ul Haque as the MD for PSO.

Sheikh Imran ul Haque

NAB has launched another case against former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for illegally appointing Sheikh Imran ul Haque as the MD for PSO, in its Karachi Chapter. In the statement released by NAB on Friday, it was revealed that non-bailable arrest warrants have been issued for Abbasi along with former Petroleum Secretary Arshad Mirza, who is also named in this reference.

Moreover, Imran ul Haque and Yacoob Suttar – former deputy MD of finance at PSO – have been issued notices, along with Abbasi by NAB. The people charged are required to come before an accountability court on April 10th.

This move was highly criticised by PML-N leader Shahbaz Sharif, who asked the “NAB-Niazi” to stop fighting the media and opposition, and focus on COVID-19.

In 2018, NAB presented its report in the Supreme Court that suggested that the appointment was made by Former PM Abbasi on the basis of friendship and favouritism. It was further claimed by NAB that Sheikh Imran ul Haque’s appointment was a conflict of interest, as PSO had a LNG contract with his former employer – Engro Corporation.

In addition to this, it was also alleged by NAB that Haque has misused his authority to hire Suttar as his Deputy MD in Finance. The National Accountability Bureau stated that Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources was kept out of the loop and no internal competitive process, which is necessary in the hiring process. They also alleged that Haq helped out Suttar because the latter had ratified Haque’s pay package just before joining and both of them had been colleagues in Engro Corporation.
