New Law to Prevent Domestic Violence Against Women

Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has the termed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Domestic Violence against Women (Prevention and Protection) Bill as landmark legislation, assuring that it will prevent domestic violence again women.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, January 24, the CM has said that it was an integral achievement of the incumbent government.

He said that protecting women from domestic violence, the rights of women in society and empowering them is one of the most focused areas of the government.

Mahmood Khan added that KPK’s provincial government, in light of the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, is taking outcome-based measures in that regard.

Besides effective legislation, the KPK government was taking all other necessary steps to provide all kinds of protection to the vulnerable segments of society including women and children, according to Mahmood Khan.

He termed the bill a thorough and extensive piece of legislation aimed at preventing domestic violence against women. According to the law, violence against women will be punished with imprisonment for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years. Moreover, economic, psychological and sexual pressuring also classify as violence against women.

Mahmood Khan stated that under the law, committees would be formed at the district level, headed by the concerned deputy commissioner. These will provide medical aid, shelter, support and legal assistance to the victimised woman. Furthermore, awareness among women at local level about their rights under the law will be created besides a proper system is being set up what will keep a record of complaints, petitions and court orders etc.

He added that as provided in the law, a helpline would also be set up to prevent incidents of domestic violence. He said that incidents of violence could be reported through the helpline.
