Ngozi Okinjo Iweala makes History at the World Trade Organization

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian-American economist and international development expert who has been appointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization(WTO). She is the first woman and the first African to hold this position. She starts her tenure from 1st March and the world can’t wait for her to take charge and deal with international trade negotiators in her new role at the WTO.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, currently 66-years old holds US citizenship but is proud to be a Nigerian and flaunts her Nigerian identity with her African-print tailored outfits. She adopted these outfits as they provide a smart look and were easy for a school run for her kids, and thrifty too.

The Harward economist sits on the boards of Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, and the African Risk Capacity. She has also worked for the World Bank as a development economist for 25 years, along with serving two terms as a finance minister of Nigeria. Her economic reforms have saved Nigeria at a critical period, having a far-reaching impact. She is also credited for de-lining the budget from the oil price, allowing the country to save money when the oil prices were high. One of her greatest achievements was leading a team that negotiated a whopping $18bn debt write-off in 2005 for the country, helping Nigeria obtain its first-ever sovereign debt rating.

Now she plans on working her way to WTO, where she feels that ” what it needs is a shakeup, They need something different, it cannot be business as usual for the WTO – they need someone willing to do the reforms and lead”.
