NUST is Bringing Exhilarating World of Formula One to Pakistan with HPGS

HPGS and NFST are collaborating to enhance engineering skills in students through interactive learning experiences, aiming to impact their learning.

NUST is Bringing Formula One to Pakistan with Happy Palace Grammar School (HPGS)

NUST Formula Student Team (NFST) is the Formula Student team of the National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan Navy Engineering College (NUST-PNEC). It is a student-based team that represents Pakistan internationally at Formula Student platforms. The team is privileged to represent NUST and Pakistan for ten consecutive years, at Europe’s most established educational motorsports competition, Formula Student UK. Formula Student, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, challenges student engineers to design, build and test a single-seat racing car in one year. The cars are then judged on their speed, acceleration, handling, and endurance in a series of time-trial races, while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills.

The F1 in Schools competition is a globally recognized educational program that combines the excitement of Formula 1 racing with the principles of STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, which is led by F1 to promote STEM among the younger generation specifically in the automotive sector. The competition introduces students to STEM subjects by creating a miniature F1 car which develops and enhances the engineering, designing, and entrepreneurship skills of young minds that aim to progress in the STEM field. Each F1 School team consists of 3-6 members aged between 14-19 years who are responsible for designing and manufacturing the mini F1 car using CAD/CAM design tools. The cars are raced on a 20m long track where they are assessed by a software called F1 Virtual Wind Tunnel, designed specifically for this purpose. The competition is divided into 3 classes:

Professional Class aimed at 11- to 19-year-olds.

Development Class aimed at 11- to 19-year-olds in their first year.

Entry Class aimed at 11- to 14-year-olds.

The competition has several aspects that include, specification judging, engineering judging, portfolio & pit display judging, verbal presentation judging and racing. Every team is supposed to appear in all the aspects of the competition.

With the competition taking place in more than 51 countries across the world and opportunities within the UK and US, it is one of the largest global educational programs. NFST has launched the venture of F1 in schools in Pakistan to develop the F1 culture in the young generations of Pakistan. Previously collaborated with Cedar College, NFST is now collaborating with Happy Palace Grammar School (HPGS). The idea is to make an autonomous team of young students who are capable of making their miniature version of the F1 car.

Members of NFST are giving technical and project management workshops to the students of HPGS. The technical department is further divided into structural and aerodynamics. Mechanical and electrical engineering students who are members of NFST are providing the students of HPGS with the basic knowledge and skill of making a miniature F1 car by the rules of F1 in schools. This miniature F1 car will be presented in the F1 in Schools competition held in UAE in July 2024 where teams from across the world compete and present their mini F1 cars. Other than the physics, aerodynamics, design and manufacturing skills of members, the competition also aims to test their soft skills including, leadership/teamwork, media, marketing, and sponsorship skills.

The objective of this collaboration between NFST and HPGS is to develop engineering skills in young students apart from their theoretical learning in a very fun, exciting, and interactive manner. This also hopes to create an impact on the learning concept of engineering students in Pakistan.
