Online Classes: Receiving Education Through the Screen

Online classes were a precautionary measure taken to control the spread of COVID-19. However, it has does done more harm than good.

By now many students have taken their classes online. Studying online seemed impossible in the past and why wouldn’t it? Who would have thought we’ll ever be able to gain knowledge from someone sitting on the other side of the screen. But taking classes online has put many students through a lot of stress as well. It has had a negative impact rather than a positive one on most.

Let’s think about it for a while and put ourselves in their shoes. You’ve got a numerical course that’s quite tough to understand in one go, and you’re not very fond of it. This particular course is important and your GPA depends on it. It’s also a core course of your degree. Now, the teacher isn’t able to give you individual attention and he/she is also not reachable through phone after class timings. There a disturbance in the class due to your wifi and you can’t even ask the teacher any questions due to the connection. You’re stuck with a quiz and you have no idea how to do it. Your last resort is to ask a friend but unfortunately, that friend also has no clue what’s going on. In this situation, there’s really nothing that one can do except either cheat or look online for an explanation of similar questions.

Online Classes

This is the story of not one but many students all over the globe. Online classes were obviously a step taken as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, it has done more harm than good. Most students who are unable to learn through online classes resort to cheating. Even though the test papers drafted were difficult than the previous semesters but still it didn’t stop them from cheating. The rate of using other means to pass tests and examinations became higher in these past few months.

This is just the story of university students. I haven’t touched the topic of young school going kids. They’re also having an equally hard time paying attention in class. Starting a new school year without even going to school, unable to meet their new teachers, and helpless when the teacher is teaching something. I know how much my younger siblings are struggling and the homework just keeps on piling up. Their concepts aren’t clear which puts them in stress and it eventually becomes one of the reasons for their poor performance.

I believe that the government needs to at least provide good wifi across the country if they’re planning on continuing online classes for the young ones. The situation that we’re in is understandable. However, Pakistan isn’t ready for online classes considering the lack of resources here. Privileged are the ones who have good wifi and enough devices for all the kids in the house to use at the same time to attend their classes.

Not being able to understand and perform well in class puts the students in stress. Sometimes the information being given out isn’t understood properly. There can be better strategies implemented to help out the young school going students as colleges and universities are resuming from the 15th of this month.
