Pakistan and Egypt Strengthen Relations

During his visit, FM Qureshi discusses "detailed consultations" with Shoukry. Both also discuss bilateral relations & ways to "further strengthen them.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi left for his two-day visit to Egypt on Tuesday, February 16 upon the invitation of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Hassan Shoukry. During his visit, FM Qureshi is expected to “detailed consultations” with Shoukry. Both officials will also discuss bilateral relations and ways to “further strengthen and diversify” them.

Qureshi and Shoukry will hold a joint press conference as well. The foreign minister will also hold meetings with the Pakistani diaspora in Egypt as well as with Egyptian businessmen, with whom he will talk about investment opportunities in Pakistan and the incentives offered by the government for foreign investors.

Before leaving for Cairo, Foreign Minister Qureshi said in a video message that Egypt is an “important country of the Muslim ummah which is also known as Africa’s gateway”

“Promotion of trade with African countries is amongst our government’s important priorities,” he said.

As of Wednesday, February 17, as planned beforehand, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi urged a delegation of the Egyptian business community in Cairo to invest in Pakistan by highlighting the incentives the government is offering to foreign investors in various sectors inclusive of housing, energy and health.

During the talks, FM Qureshi reiterated that “brotherly relations” between Pakistan and Egypt could further improve through an increase in economic partnership and bilateral trade. He also assured the Egyptian business community that the Pakistani government would take all necessary steps to guide and support them if they are to invest in Pakistan. Reportedly, the chief executive officer of Elsewedy Electric company also met Qureshi and expressed an interest in investing in Pakistan.

Pakistan is gradually emerging as a prominent market because of the incumbent government’s “prudent economic policies”.

Both foreign ministers discussed matters of mutual interest in a meeting. FM Qureshi also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi on Wednesday and discussed Pakistan’s shifting emphasis from geo-politics to geo-economics.
