Pakistan is Working on Developing its Blue Economy

FM Qureshi at the IMC-21 stated that the government was aware of the importance of the blue economy and is taking all possible measures for its development.

A three-day International Maritime Conference (IMC-21) was organised on Monday, February 15 on the theme of ‘Development of Blue Economy under a Secure and Sustainable Environment: A Shared Future for Western Indian Ocean Region’ by the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) under the patronage of the Pakistan Navy.

At the conference, a range of prominent speakers were present who delivered addresses during the event in which they presented their thoughts on the theme.

Chief Guest at the closing ceremony, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, addressing the audience, said the PTI government was aware of the importance of the blue economy and taking all relevant measures for its development.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi while referring to the importance of developing the blue economy, emphasised the huge potential of the maritime sector in Pakistan. Furthermore, he pointed out that here all other sectors of our economy intersect while disclosing that the fundamental new shipping policy offered tangible benefits pertaining to investments in the maritime sector.

Meanwhile, Shah Mahmood Qureshi added that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was rightfully considered a game-changer not only for Pakistan but for the economic development and prosperity of the entire South-Asian region.

The Pakistan Navy was hailed for promoting maritime awareness in the country through the conferences like the IMC-21, undertaking efforts for the development of the blue economy, taking various measures to ensure peace at sea, both individually and in collaboration with regional and extra-regional naval forces.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi also commended NIMA for attracting a large number of intellectuals from around the globe which largely contributed to the success of the conference.

Earlier, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi in his closing remarks extended his thanks to all the participants, panellists and speakers who travelled from distant areas or participated virtually to add value to the conference.

The last day of the IMC-21 comprised of two sessions. During the first session, Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj GuI was the chief guest and later, director of Maritime Research, World Maritime University, Sweden, Dr Aykut I. Olcer, in an online talk voiced his views regarding the importance of the blue economy and decarburisation of international shipping for a sustainable planet.

Moreover, prominent scholars deliberated on ocean governance, policies and laws.
