According to Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood in the National e-Commerce Council meeting on June 18, this list contains the details of exporters that deal with surgical and sports goods, and home textile sectors. The list will be further expanded after this trial is successful.

During this National e-Commerce Council meeting, a video message from the Director General of World Trade Organisation (WTO), who appreciated the efforts by Pakistan in the right direction. Dawood also talked about the progress of the e-commerce policy since October 2019 and the efforts of both public and private sectors to have a successful implementation of said policy.

He further highlighted that the trend of e-commerce has been accelerating in the past couple of years along with development and access to the internet. The vitality of e-commerce has risen especially in COVID-19 pandemic, making it an important sector for the country. This is why the sector needs to be invested in – so that there are resources to ensure digital adoption. The e-commerce platform will especially be a success with the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as new markets will open up for them.

The State Bank of Pakistan also brought up the progress of the regulatory framework for the facilitation of cross-border B2C through e-commerce; it is complete and is to be adopted right after it integrates with the e-commerce module that is being developed by the Federal Board Revenue (FBR).

The Consumer Protection Councils of Punjab and Lahore and of the Consumer Rights Commission of Pakistan representatives were also attending the meeting being chaired by Dawood, and mentioned that both federal and provincial consumer laws were being amended so they can include e-commerce. According to the representatives, webinars will be used to educate the academia and train judicial officers in consumer protection.

Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) also stated that they have many upcoming initiatives to promote the e-commerce policy, including a separate sector for e-commerce. So far, 152 businesses have registered on its portal.

The commerce secretary said the Ministry of Commerce was continuously engaged with Pakistan’s foreign trade missions for promoting trade and exploring new markets for exporters, and the latest development is registration of our country’s good sellers on Amazon.
