PDM Faces Detriments as Internal Differences Emerge

Due to differences on the issue of resignations from the assemblies, PDM's long march set to take place on March 26 has been postponed.

The long-awaited and discussed long march of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has yet again been postponed. This time the delay comes in light of the emergence of internal differences on the issue of resignations from assemblies.

A press conference was held today after a brief meeting of the PDM in Islamabad. While addressing the press conference, JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman said the PPP has ‘reservations’ over linking the resignations with the long march and has requested time to hold consultations within its Central Executive Committee (CEC) before making the PDM aware of its decision.

“We have given them the chance and we will await their decision. Until then, the March 26 long march will be considered postponed,” said the JUI-F supremo while angrily walking away from the press conference.

Moreover, on the other side of the PDM, there seem to be political tensions arising between the leaders of PPP and PML-N. PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari reportedly asked PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan which allegedly led to a heated exchange between PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and Asif Ali Zardari.

Ms Nawaz said no one had the right to ask Mr Sharif to come back. She said if anyone wanted to talk to Nawaz Sharif, then he should talk to her as a representative of Mr Sharif.

“Do not make such decisions which may force us to part ways,” said Mr Zardari, adding that such a situation would only be beneficial for the “enemies of democracy.”

Yousaf Raza Gilani has maintained his loyalties. The former premier said that the PPP has clearly communicated to the PDM: “If you want us to hand in resignations, give us some time. We will go back to the CEC, take their approval and get back to you.”

As for Nawaz Sharif’s comments and views on these new turn of events in the PDM, he was recorded laughing at Zardari’s comments.

Cracks within the ranks of the opposition’s PDM are increasingly becoming visible.
