The shooting of the movie will commence from September this year in Birmingham

Fans of the hit British crime series ‘Peaky Blinders’ have reason to celebrate as it’s been confirmed that Cillian Murphy will be reprising his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming film adaptation.

The news was confirmed by series creator Steven Knight at the premiere of his new BBC drama ‘The Town’. Speaking to Birmingham World, Steven assured fans that Cillian is “definitely” returning for the movie, with filming scheduled to start in September in Digbeth, Birmingham.

This announcement comes as a relief to fans who have been eagerly anticipating the return of the cherished gangster character. Cillian emphasised the importance of a worthy script, stating, “If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it. But it has to be right,”  in an interview with Rolling Stone U.K.

He reiterated this sentiment to the Irish Star, reaffirming his commitment to the project if Steven delivers a script that meets his expectations.

During a conversation with Margot Robbie for Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ series, Murphy expressed his openness to the idea of a spinoff movie, stating, “I’ve always thought that if there’s more story to tell.”

‘Peaky Blinders’ originally premiered on BBC Two overseas (its final two seasons moved to BBC One), but after the show arrived on Netflix its popularity exploded. The series finale aired in April 2022, but Knight never hid his intentions to continue the story in a movie.

In an interview with Esquire — before the series finale — Steven teased the film’s storyline, promising fans an exciting continuation of the ‘Peaky Blinders’ saga.

The rest of the cast is yet to be confirmed. However, with Cillian’s return as Tommy Shelby and Steven at the helm, fans can rest assured that the ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie will deliver all the thrills and excitement they’ve come to expect from the acclaimed series.
