Price Caps on Imported Vaccines Exempted by Pakistan

The government of Pakistan has allowed private pharmaceutical companies to import the vaccine, without having to pay any price caps.

Pakistan recorded 1,502 new Covid-19 cases, where 57 people lost their lives across the country in a single day. Thereby, Pakistan has allowed private pharmaceutical companies to import the vaccine, without having to pay any price caps, that implemented on all the drug sales in the country.

This has been allowed on the condition that only registered vaccines that are already being used in the countries where they have been manufactured, are imported into Pakistan. This has been done to save the lives of people who can afford to buy the vaccine directly from the market.

The decision was approved by the federal government and was confirmed by Special Assistant to Prime Minister on National Health Services Dr. Faisal Sultan. Currently, the government has yet to secure a massive volume of vaccines from companies. It was able to secure 500,000 doses of Sinopharm’s vaccine donated by China, which are being administered to frontline health workers on a priority basis. Pakistan has booked another 1.1 million vaccine doses of Sinopharm from China.

The question about the cost of the vaccine was also raised, as a certain cost needs to be determined for private companies before they start selling the vaccine to people. In response, the officials claimed that it was very difficult to fix the vaccine’s price as currently it is being sold at different prices all over the world, including India and China. Currently, no price can be fixed for the vaccine until it is readily available in the international market at stabilized prices.

Dr Faisal said that when the vaccines are readily available and there is market competition, the prices will set automatically. Pakistan plans to administer the doze to its population for free but till then the people who can afford to pay for it will have an option to purchase it from the private sector.

Moreover, Covax, a global initiative aimed to provide equal access to Covid-19 vaccines has announced to provide Pakistan with 17 million free doses by the end of March.
