Prime Minister Orders Division of DRAP into Two Wings
PM orders division of DRAP into two wings - one for policy, the other for enforcement of policies
As DRAP’s performance is beginning to falter in the light of the COVID-19, and complaints are increasing day by day. The irregularities are increasing for both the customers and manufacturers. When the Prime Minister was informed of these irregularities, he directed for DRAP to be divided into two – one for policy making, the other for enforcement. Prime Minister Khan also took notice of DRAP being understaffed – currently there are only 5 directors in comparison to the 13 there should be.
DRAP is a federal government department which registers and fixes prices of medicines and ensures their availability. The PM also asked them to register prices following a proper procedure. He further stated that the government would ensure easy availability of life-saving drugs, as well as other important medicines, at affordable prices because it is a high priority to public health.
This meeting was attended by Special Assistant to the PM on Health Dr Zafar Mirza, Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan, the National Health Services secretary Dr. Tanveer Ahmed Qureshi and the CEO of DRAP Asim Rauf.
It is time for DRAP to be more efficient as this is the time to ensure fair prices and availability of medicines and personal protective equipment. DRAP should also be working with the Ministry of Health to raise further awareness about the effectiveness of masks and sanitisers.
